Dear MyPE
Although it doesn’t sit very well with me that South Africa has too many British Empire names for its landmarks, but it seems that the Geographical Names committee is primarily justifying its Relevance & Salaries (The Herald 24 September 2020) in that Name-changing crusade.
Most of all, the propagated “colonial” names would be most-probably replaced by ANC pantheon names; making ANC Imperialism a replacement for British & Afrikaner bumptious bulldozing.
In the case of Port Elizabeth, I have found out that most people who are against that name tend to be first generation Economic Refugees that come from the rural Eastern Cape, former Ciskei and/or Transkei bantustans. Like most fortune seekers, they tend to disrespect if not regarding the born-and-bred people of a particular region with snobbish disdain.
A typical example are the Equatorial African refugees like Nigerians that come to South Africa, in most cases, to sow hell & damnation that they replicate from their countries of origion. I repeat, there is no single race group that loves South Africa more than the Afrikaner and yet none more jealous of Black people’s (any Non-Aryan in the South African context eg. ethnic African, Coloured, Indian, Chinese etc.) economic advancement.
