Port Elizabeth can look forward to a return performance by locally bred singer-songwriter, Meri Kenaz who’ll be performing this Friday, 18 May, from 7:30 pm at Warmer Gardens, 118 Main Rd, Walmer. Joining her is Cape Town bassist, Shafiek Kimmie who, with frets removed, glides through the grooves of some familiar, and some new songs.
For Meri Kenaz, travelling is a source of much inspiration. Her music is likened to a commentary to a playful adventure through the kaleidoscope of life. A self taught player, her style ranges dramatically and is as unique to her as the voice that carries her songs. In 2010 she won a Silver Standard Bank Ovation at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival, an accolade she shared with the legendary guitarist, singer and songwriter, Nibs van der Spuy.
Her self-titled album, released in 2011, will be on sale this Friday. Meri is known for the personal touch she gives to the packaging of her recordings, and this full length album is no less unique to the hand-packaged, fabric EP’s that preceded it. The music, recorded with SAMA-nominated best engineer, Howard Butcher, in the Knysna forest, is reason enough to own her album. Yet, owning music seems a foreign concept to this budding young artist as she’s offering her music for free download on her website, www.merikenaz.com.
Editor’s Notes: You will need a dropbox account (free) to download Meri’s Album.
The Meri Kenaz Warmer Gardens live show costs a mere R30, the musical journey that’ll bring is priceless.
