Merging Sculpture and Storytelling

25 February 2022 By Alan Straton

News from Angel Mey:

Gqeberha, February, Thursday, 2022: Human society runs on stories. It always has. From oral myths past down generations, to the paintings marked on the inside of cave walls, to the films we watch, and the books we read today, stories create our reality, they shape the way we as individuals see the world. A good story can change our perception and help us change the biases in our interpretation of the world.

The art and work of Angel Mey sets out to explore ways of meaningful storytelling within the fields of visual art and stop motion film.

Come explore the blurred borders of traditional sculpture and multimodal storytelling either online or in person. The Exhibition: The Hero’s Journey and its Practical Uses in Visual Storytelling is currently showing at The Bird Street Gallery and will run until the 18th of March, you can also explore this exhibition from the comfort of your own home with an online screening of the film and virtual exhibition that can be found in the link below.

The art created for this show is made as part of a practise-based research enquiry towards a Master of Fine Art at the Nelson Mandela University in South Africa.
It is made in collaboration with Africa Earth Observatory Network and the Africa Alive Corridor project (AAC).

AAC aims to tell the geologic, biologic, and cultural ‘transdisciplinary autobiography’ of Africa. The AAC is part of a global initiative to stem the 6th extinction and deal with global climate change. More than 200 scientists, research students and artist are working collectively on a 21-book series and videos and writing unique time-line stories, including the heritages linked to ‘Out of Africa’ and ‘Into Africa’ colonisations.
This body of work forms part of this initiative as it explores how fine art, fiction, and multimodal storytelling can be used as a platform to highlight environmental issues.

I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
