The new Eastern Province Rugby Union General Manager Sharief Gamiet is a graduate of the International Centre of Sports Studies (CIES) and Fifa Sport Management Programme facilitated by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
Gamiet, who graduated cum laude from the year-long, block-release certificate programme in 2013, took up his new post on 1 March. “The roof of my house nearly came down on us when I received news of the appointment,” said Gamiet, who has a wealth of sports administrative experience.
Gamiet, of Framesby, is looking forward to strengthening and improving the level of administration throughout the amateur code as he believes it can lead to a greater level of player development and the game of Rugby in general. “Good administration will assist EP Rugby in its goals to improve development of club rugby, women’s rugby, school’s rugby, Seven’s rugby, refereeing and coaching,” said Gamiet.
With the EP Kings playing Currie Cup Rugby for the next two years and Super Rugby in 2016, the spotlight is firmly on the team to deliver.
He credits the Fifa/CIES sport management course for providing the holistic training he needs to manage all aspects of the non-commercial division of the EP Rugby Union.
“All aspects of the course – from the strategic management through to the financial aspects of managing sport – contributed to my success in landing this job,” said Gamiet.
Gamiet already has a long association with various sporting codes, both as a player and administrator.
He played hockey, volleyball and rugby, and swam before going on to the coaching and administration within the same sporting disciplines. His technical knowledge and accomplishments have seen him work at both the Olympics and Paralympics, most recently at the London Olympics in 2012 as an international technical official.
He is also a former Border Aquatics president, executive member of the South African Sport Association for Persons with Disabilities, Chairperson of LOC’s that hosted, the International Women’s Waterpolo Tournament, Junior Swimming National Championships and National Championships for the Physically Disabled.
He has also been involved in international events hosted in South Africa including the All Africa Games in 1999, 10th Men’s World Softball Championships in 2000, Cricket World Cup 2003, 2010 Fifa World Cup and CAF African Cup of Nations 2013.
Gamiet takes over from Charl Crous, who is now the CEO of EP Kings and Southern Kings, after spending eight years with the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture – Cacadu District Office in Grahamstown where he oversaw transformation, development and promotion of school sport.
