A key strategic objective of the Nelson Mandela University Isuzu Chair in Mechatronics is to provide assistance for manufacturing-related development and problem solving at Isuzu, as well as at local automotive suppliers.

Through research and innovation, the Chair in Mechatronics facilitates co-operation between industry and academia with the aim to enhance human capital development in the automotive sector. To this end, Isuzu Motors South Africa sponsors the Chair in Mechatronics at the Nelson Mandela University. Before the commencement of the year-examination, Mechatronics Engineering students visited the Isuzu assembly plant in Struandale, Port Elizabeth to experience first-hand the processes involved in vehicle manufacturing and the deployment of automation in the plant.
