Dear MyPE
The Eastern Cape (EC) Department of Transport has launched a road safety campaign in Aliwal North today. The Democratic Alliance urges EC Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana, to ensure that there is an increase in traffic police presence on the roads this festive season.
The South African Road Federation (SARF) has identified the following key factors in ensuring road safety:
Strict law enforcement is needed with regard to unlicensed, un-roadworthy and overloaded vehicles.
Drunk driving, reckless driving, speeding and irresponsible behaviour must be monitored and dealt with effectively on our roads.
Infrastructure must be maintained to prevent dangerous road conditions.
It was reported that 190 people died on Eastern Cape roads during the festive season last year. The MEC must take the necessary steps to ensure that this number is reduced radically this year.
The DA implores the MEC to review the current shift system for traffic officers and revert back to the agreement (resolution 14) presented by the Chamber for ratification in 2009 which stated that a shift system for traffic officers would be implemented in the Eastern Cape.
The MEC has stated that an additional 120 vehicles would be acquired and that there will be 24-hour roadblocks in order to improve traffic law enforcement. The DA welcomes these resolutions and we will monitor the situation closely.
We call on all road users to play their part by acting responsibly during the holiday season.
Regards
Marshall von Buchenroder, MPL
