Manganese Ore and Snow White

One day as clean as Snow White, the next as dirty as a miner after a shift in a coal mine.

Dear MyPE

I previously wrote to family about the Manganese Ore and they thought that I was being unfair and coming on too hard regarding the ore dust – you might have thought so too.

This was until I showed them the accompanying picture taken on 6 December 2015 – my yacht was clean before this date.

Just being moored in the PE Harbour during December presented days of frustration.

I have now reached the United States and can say now that from my experience, this manganese dust also embeds itself in the paint and slowly leaches out as brown corrosion under the continuous effect of seawater impact when sailing. Together with the run-off from the deck and mast, it shows in a streaky rusty pattern, So when you arrive on the other side of the ocean, the boat looks like a steel boat that appears to have been at sea for years, corroding away.

A bottle of “snowwhite” does handle the job, when applied at intervals. (don’t forget to keep one on board when you leave Port Elizabeth)
