Mandela Foundation and City of Ekurhuleni celebrate a successful Nelson Mandela Day Global Network Road Show at the 74th United Nations General Assembly:

07 October 2019, Johannesburg – The Nelson Mandela Foundation in partnership with the City of Ekurhuleni launched the Nelson Mandela Day Global Network Campaign. The Nelson Mandela Foundation and the City of Ekurhuleni presented a programme filled with activities designed to honour the lifetime of service Nelson Mandela gave to South Africa and the world.

The CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Mr Sello Hatang and the Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Councillor Mzwandile Masina hosted dignitaries from the United Nations General assembly to a two day programme which included a Heritage celebration event, a tour tracking Madiba’s footprints in the City of New York and Business to Business and Business to Government meetings which explored business and investment opportunities in the City of Ekurhuleni.

The Executive Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni, Councillor Mzwandile Masina took the opportunity to profile the City and opportunities for public private partnerships aimed at delivering dignity and prosperity for all citizens of Ekurhuleni.

The Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Councillor Mzwandile Masina when asked about why the City partnered with the Nelson Mandela Foundation on this project commented “We, as the City of Ekurhuleni, came to New York to celebrate the legacy of Nelson Mandela and to seek the best international partners to facilitate investment and partnerships in our city to ensure the creation much needed sustainable jobs for our youth.”

The City of Ekurhuleni partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation Mandela Day Global Network, is envisioned to be a collaborative, sustainable, solutions-based development platform that will inspire global companies to live the Mandela legacy by taking action against poverty and inequality by investing in strategic projects aimed at stamping out poverty.

Foreign direct investment is a crucial component in the delivery of the City of Ekurhuleni ten point economic development programme. “This investor outreach is the first of many clear steps being taken by my executive team to act against poverty and to ensure prosperity for all citizens of Ekurhuleni.” Says The Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Councillor Mzwandile Masina.

“Ensuring sustainability has to be a key objective of any future intervention we as the Nelson Mandela Foundation undertake. It isn’t enough any longer to simply try and do more. We have to do differently.  In aid of this objective we came back to New York with over 140 countries that mark Madiba’s legacy in one form or another to ask these countries to join us in acting against poverty ensuring social justice for all. ” says the Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer, Sello Hatang.

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
