Magnetic Storm reduces grid reliance

16 March 2015 By Port Elizabethan

With ever increasing pressure on the grid, Magnetic Storm has invested R170 000 in its first phase of going green: a 7kw hybrid system which offers grid tie and battery backup for essential circuits such as servers, desktop computers and lights during power outages.

The installation is projected to generate 6,876kWhr per annum, saving R11,614 in year one if electricity prices remain at R1.49/unit.

“We know events can use up a lot of power, and be a drain on the grid, which is why we want to reduce our impact on the environment. The simplest way to do this currently is by being greener in our head office operations,” comments Magnetic Storm CEO Glenn van Eck. “

Over 20 years, the installation will generate over 830 megawatts of power (a potential saving R2,310,294.44 in electricity), which means Magnetic Storm is preventing 49,824kg of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere.

Installed by Straton Solar, the system is made up of a Conext XW+ grid interactive inverter from Schneider with 20 250w Yingli Solar Panels, and 495 Amp Hours of 48 Volt battery backup.

Phase two of the Magnetic Storm bid to go green will see the installation of a 25KW pure grid tie system with 27kWs of solar panels with a projected yield of 41,518 units per annum.
