The Athenaeum in Belmont Terrace Street, Port Elizabeth will be hosting an exhibition titled “Made in China” from the 17th February 2014 to the 18th March 2014.
China is often considered the longest continuous civilization, with some historians denoting 6000 B.C. as the dawn of Chinese civilization. It also has the world’s longest continuously used written language. As a country with a wealth of cultural, scientific, mathematical, technical, architectural and political diversity and history, it is marked – coming into the contemporary age after its communist isolation – as place of extremes and paradox.
From information to technology, advanced consumerism to cheap production, overnight cities to radical poverty, China is both shrouded in mysterious praxis while remaining an integral – inescapable – part of our every day existence. The call for submissions on the theme “Made in China” encourages artists to interrogate the deep penetration of Chinese mass production while also analysing how this ancient culture continues to inform global culture and innovation as it has done for millennia. Artists are also called to comment on China’s impact on our local context, as investment, and with it culture, enter the African domain with increasing regularity. China is also faced with rapid change and the forces of globalisation and internal domination combine on its enigmatic canvas.
Artists are invited to submit works which incorporate or comment on the theme through any medium or material.
Conditions of Entry:
