Luke Watson Slips the EP Jersey on 10 Years Down the Line

19 May 2011 By Alan Straton

Luke Watson, the man who invites ‘enthusiastic debate’ wherever he goes, touched down at Port Elizabeth Airport this afternoon with his wife and child.

Watson will be playing for the EP Kings and has a three year contract with the local franchise which is vying for promotion and a spot in Super Rugby in 2013.

Welcoming Luke home as representatives of Eastern Province Rugby were board members, Danie Gouws and Freddie Makoki. Danie said; “Luke is going to be an asset and we are happy to have a player of his calibre joining EP” whilst Makoki was happy to; “Welcome a son of the soil back.”

I must confess at the outset that having Luke Watson back in the EP fold is a bit like getting a new Bull Terrier puppy; You know it is going to be fiercely loyal and protect you but you don’t really want to go through the tantrums, carpet peeing, lumpy doo doo and enthusiastic chewing of various bits of furniture that goes along with it. I hope that fatherhood has served to mature our Luke a little bit.

Luke did admit that coming back to South African Rugby after captaining Bath was a risky and difficult decision but that EP Coach Alan Solomons chat to him (when Alan was coaching the Barbarians in London, England 8 months ago) was what swung him to sign for EP and commit to three years without the option of entering the general player pool and go and play Super Rugby after a year.

Luke, you will forgive me for not saying that the jury is still out on whether it is awesome to have you back, but we are thrilled that you said; “It is awesome to be back!” Settle in well and let the Rugby talk.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
