The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is once again looking at the Municipal owned resorts and seeking solutions to improve their management and to make them ‘sweat’ for ratepayers.
In a report to the Mayoral Committee on Wednesday 25 October it was pointed out that the present operators of these resorts are not contractually obliged to:
- Optimise the revenue streams
- Maintain the resorts to a set standard or
- To develop the resorts into prestigious products that will enhance tourism development.
Most of the Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage resorts have been on a downward spiral with many of them closed and most in advanced states of decay.
Resorts owned by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality include; resorts on Marine Drive – Willows, Willow Grove, Three Pools, Noordhoek, Willow Park, Willow Glen and Mangold’s Pool – Van Stadens Resort, Springs Resort, Maitlands resort, Beachview Resort.
In 2015 Municipal spokesman Mthubanzi Mniki said he could not provide details about the plans for resorts, except for Springs in Uitenhage, as the others formed part of the Kabuso Report, which was a legal issue. “The municipality has a maintenance plan that it uses to maintain the resorts. The budget is allocated and the maintenance and repairs of resorts are governed by budget availability,” he said.
The 2014/15 capital budget allocation for the Springs Resort was R1-million, of which 100% had been spent. By all intents it wasn’t money well spent.
In the meantime upcountry visitors headed to a seaside holiday with young families and on a budget will have already booked elsewhere, denying the City of much needed revenue. We at MyPE hope that theses tourists haven’t booked in the City of Cape Town which self manages 13 camping and chalet facilities – Silwerstroomstrand Resort, Fish Hoek Resort, Millers Point Resort, Soetwater Resort, Zandvlei Resort, Blue Waters Resort, Harmony Park Resort, Hendon Park Resort, Kogel Bay Resort and the Macassar Resort – all offering a variety of facilities including electrified and non-electrified camping sites, ablution facilities, chalets, swimming pools and small conference facilities.
