Local volunteers contribute to over 200 projects in twenty countries

18 September 2012 By Alan Straton

More than 350 FMCSA employees participated in more than 10 volunteer initiatives in Pretoria and Port Elizabeth joining thousands of Ford Motor Company employees from around the globe who participated in the company’s annual volunteer programme, the Ford Global Week of Caring. The initiative ran from 8 to 16 September and saw local employees spending more than 2 280 hours in total.

Volunteers from both the Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria and the Struandale Engine Plant in Port Elizabeth ventured into their communities where they planted gardens, provided maintenance assistance and donated food parcels, clothing and other required items.

This is the seventh annual instalment of the worldwide event, which is aimed at building Ford employee participation, involvement and support of the communities in which they live and work.

“The Global Week of Caring is a Ford initiative that allows staff to get involved with the community and make a difference,” says Jeff Nemeth, FMCSA president and CEO, FMCSA. “Our employees have truly embraced the program and over the years we have seen participation and involvement grow considerably.”

Ford employees in the Eastern Cape visited Funduzufe Educare Centre and Crèche, Laphumilanga HIV/AIDS Orphan Centre, Luvuyo Special School and the House of Resurrection orphanage.

“We enjoyed a fantastic week getting involved with and helping local communities, however we feel it is important our involvement doesn’t end with the culmination of the week’s activities. Ford’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives are ongoing and we hope that our employees will take inspiration from the initiative and be inspired to get even more involved in their own communities,” concludes Nemeth.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
