Local Comrades and Two Oceans Qualifier

17 August 2011 By Alan Straton

The annual Afri-Save Marathon is around the corner and runners from Uitenhage and surrounding areas are getting ready to run!

The 42.2km Marathon will be taking place on Saturday 3 September starting at 06:00 am from the Muir College sport fields. This race, previously known as the Goodyear Marathon, is now in it’s third year as the Afri-Save Marathon. This 42.2km Marathon is a qualifier for the 2012 Two Oceans’ and Comrades’ marathons.

To provide extra entertainment and fun there will also be a 10km and 5km Fun Run for those who are not quite ready yet to tackle the 42.2km Marathon. The minimum age on race day is fifteen years for the 10km race and nine years for the 5km race. Only runners in the Marathon and 10km Fun Run will qualify for medals, but T-shirts will be awarded to the first 200 entrants in all three races.

The day promises to be blast for the whole family and various prizes will be up for grabs, not only for the runners, but for spectators too. Spectators will stand the chance to win a daytrip for four people to the luxurious, five star Kwantu Private Game Reserve.

Entry forms can be obtained from Brian Bands, The Footballer and Sportsman’s Warehouse in Port Elizabeth. In Uitenhage entry forms are available at Brockett Sports. Entry closes Wednesday, 31 August at 16:00pm at participating stores.

For more information regarding the Afri-Save Marathon, contact Margie at 082 547 5413 or Liz at 072 226 2618.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
