In a vibrant event supported by ANGLO AMERICAN, the 15th Annual Business Day BASA Awards honoured 14 winners at the Wits Art Museum in Johannesburg last week. Amongst the winners announced by Master of Ceremonies, Peter Ndoro, was Nelson Mandela Bay’s own Magnetic Storm – recognised for their “SPONSORSHIP IN KIND” of the Annual SHOWTIME Awards and Musical Revue
The BASA (Business & Arts South Africa) Awards recognise and promote excellence and innovation in the field of business support for the arts and are open to all companies sponsoring arts events, projects or organisations in South Africa as well as all companies sponsoring South African arts events abroad.
Of the two categories that Magnetic Storm was named a finalist for, the PE based Sound, Audio-Visual and Lighting Company was awarded for “Sponsorship in Kind”, for a company giving non-financial support to the arts and in the case of Magnetic Storm, The Annual SHOWTIME Awards. The SHOWTIME Awards are unique to Port Elizabeth, recognising achievements in theatre and production by local talent, while creating a platform for amateur thespians to move onto national stage productions over the past 21 years.
Magnetic Storm has played a strong part in the development of theatre and technical theatre craft (sound, lighting and stage management) in recent years, with ongoing participation as the technical sponsor of the Gilbert & Sullivan Society annually, The Showtime Awards and Musical Revue with its expansion into the STEP (Showtime Technical Education by Participation) programme, as well as initiatives to support Theatre in Schools in the past.
Magnetic Storm was also a finalist in the “Sustainable Partnership” category, recognising ongoing support of projects by business for more than 10 years. Having supported The SHOWTIME Awards for 14 years, the company was a strong contender for the “Sustainable Partnership” award which went to SASOL for the “SASOL New Signature Art Competition”.
The 2011 Winner of the “Sponsorship in Kind” Award was Deloitte for the “Artist Proof Studio” initiative.
