The Volkswagen Group delivered more vehicles in the first six months of 2011 than ever. A total of 4.09 million vehicles were delivered to customers worldwide from January to June of this year. This translates to an increase of 14.1 percent on last year’s figure of 3.58 million over the same period. Europe’s largest automaker therefore once again performed noticeably better than the world market – 6.1 percent.
“Delivery figures for the first half of the year are very satisfactory. Our performance demonstrates the strength of our model range,” said the Group Board member for Sales, Christian Klingler. “We are also confident we can perform better than the global automobile market during the second half of the year, thanks to our very convincing range of models.” He went on to say that developments during the first half of the year did not yet allow a projection for the full year. “Success in the second six months won’t be automatic. Plenty of hard work lies ahead to keep our deliveries during the second half of the year at a high level,” he continued.
The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand delivered over 2.5 million vehicles for the first time in the period January to June. In total 2.53 million units were handed over to customers – 11.8 percent up on last year’s figures of 2.26 million.
Audi delivered 653 000 vehicles worldwide in the first half of the year. The premium brand from Ingolstadt’s total for the first six months of 2010 was 554 900 units – 17.7 percent down on the past six months.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles grew deliveries 29 percent to 260 300, from 201 900 units between January and June 2010.
Nationally, Volkswagen Group South Africa delivered 47 098 vehicles in the first six months of the year. This translates into an increase of 38 percent on last year’s mid-year figure of 33 996.
The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand delivered 34 572 vehicles in the period January to June – up by 27.7 percent from 27 071 during the same period last year.
Audi delivered 8 392 vehicles by mid-year, some 52 percent up on last year’s figure of 5 510 at the end of June.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles grew delivers 192 percent to 4 134 units, from 1 415 units between January and June 2010.
“We are pleased with the significant growth achieved in all three segments. The success of the Amarok in the 1-ton double cab segment must be singled out – with sales of 2 530 units in the first six months of this year achieving a segment share of 16.4%,” said Volkswagen Communications General Manager, Matt Gennrich.
