Lets be Careful on the Roads This Weekend

Transport Minister Sbusiso Ndebele has called on road users to obey the rules of the road this upcoming long weekend.

The nation celebrates Human Rights Day on Monday, 21 March, which is a public holiday.

“We call upon all road users to obey all rules and exercise human rights on our roads. We also urge motorists to drive with their headlamps on at all times,” he said, adding that traffic law enforcement officers will be on the lookout as part of the Make Roads Safe campaign and new National Rolling Enforcement Plan.

He called on motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on trips, with particular attention paid to brakes, tyres, lights and steering mechanisms.

“Road users are urged to always obey all rules of the road, buckle up, not to overload their vehicles and to rest or take a break every two hours or 200 kilometres,” he said on Thursday.

Over 15 scholar buses were impounded in the North West on Tuesday for various reasons, including faulty brakes and loose seats, while in Gauteng over 50 taxis were impounded in Ivory Park.

From 1 October 2010 to 28 February 2011, 6 535 058 vehicles and drivers were stopped and checked while 2 681 127 million fines were issued. – BuaNews
