Dear Editor
The next Know Your Bay will take place Tuesday 4 December at Bayworld. Dr Greg Hofmeyer, the curator at Bayworld museum of the largest collection of marine mammal specimens in the Southern Hemisphere, will tell us about the very recent outbreak of rabies in Cape fur seals in South Africa, the first rabies epidemic for any species of marine mammal. Since the epidemiology is almost completely unknown, it is not possible to predict how it will progress, and what impact it will have on the seal population. It is, however, having a major impact on human use of the coast in the range of Cape fur seals. Dr Hofmeyr will share what is known about the rabies in seals this far, and the response to adopt.
The event is free and open to all. From 17:30 for 18:00 until 19:00.
Alien Hack:
On Saturday 14 December, WESSA is organising an alien hack in the Baakens River Valley, mainly for Port Jackson. Alien invasive plant clearing is important for biodiversity, safety and security. Meeting at 9 am until 11 am at the Golf rd, Walmer, with own tools, gloves, sturdy shoes if you have. Contact Gisela: 073 124 2045.
Regards
Adj. Prof. Lorien Pichegru
