KwaZulu-Natal Police remain on high alert as the province ushers in Christmas Day – SAPS Crime Report: 2021-12-24 07:45:14

25 December 2021 By Port Elizabethan

from the Ministry of Police

KWAZULU-NATAL – Assurances have been made by South African Police Service members in KwaZulu-Natal that they will be taking no nonsense from any lawbreakers, as the provinces ushers in Christmas and the New Year.

This message comes as Police Minister, General Bheki Cele and the National commissioner of the SAPS General Khehla Sitole and his management team on Thursday 23 December 2021, visited the province for the last leg of the Safer Festive Season Inspection Tour.

During this tour, the top police brass visited several police operations in the Durban area and interacted with shoppers at malls and shopping centres to assess the effectiveness of SAPS operational plans to keep residents and visitors to the province, safe.

The Ministerial visit also took a turn at the Umlazi Mega City, a mall that was one of the many casualties of the July unrests.

The wanton destruction and looting cost billions of rand in losses and damages and claimed the lives of over 300 people.

The Mega City mall management told the police top brass that, while many businesses suffered huge losses as a result of the widespread looting, many have since recovered from their losses. The mall located in the heart of Umlazi in Durban, is now operating at over 80% capacity.

Minister Cele assured the management of the retail complex of the police service’s readiness to respond to any eventuality.

“All law enforcement agencies will not be taking any nonsense from anyone, especially criminals, lessons have been learnt from the past and police will remain on high alert at all times to safe guard communities, property and infrastructure.”

Cele says all hands are on deck this festive season from the whole security cluster value chain.

“Discussions within the JCPS cluster have been progressive and it is for this reason that the SANDF are already stationed at key national routes and guarding infrastructure in identified areas,”- concluded Cele.

Minister Cele’s sentiments were echoed by the KwaZulu- Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who has called on those who are in the province at this time to work with the police and not against them, he added that failure to comply with the midnight curfew will result in an arrest, as per the Disaster Management Act.”
