Dear All
Our next Know Your Bay on 5 September will present the Marine Mammal Stranding Network active along our coast from KZN to Mossel Bay, their history and experience, in a very inspiring talk. There will be three presenters: Dr Greg Hofmeyr, from Bayworld, and Mgda Maritz and Val Marsh, from the Stranding Marine Animal Rescue Team. The event is free and open to all, 17:30 for 18:00 until 19:00.
Bayworld has responded to marine mammal strandings along the coast for over a hundred years. The samples collected over time represent the largest collection of marine mammals of the Southern Hemisphere. Dr Greg Hofmeyr, the curator of this collection since 2008, kindly offered unique tours of the collection. Due to limited space in the facility, groups can only be of 10 people maximum, and would last 1/2h after the Know Your Bay (ca 19:00). Bookings essential via Greg Hofmeyr: greg@bayworld.co.za.
International Coastal Clean-Up day is around the corner, on 16 September. The Sustainable Seas Trust is the national coordinator of this event this year. They made it very easy for all of us to find a spot on their map, click on the blue turtle and know the time of the clean-up and the contact details of the coordinator: https://sstafrica.org.za/my_map/CleanSpot.html.
Some of the highlights that week are National River Clean-up Day (13 September), National Recycling Day SA (15 September), International Coastal Clean-up Day and World Clean-up Day (16 September).
The Wildlife Environment of South Africa (WESSA) is also having their monthly alien hack at Sardinia Bay on 9 September. Meeting at the parking of Sardinia Bay at 9 am. Contact: Mervyn Brouard 082 875 4210
In other news, our Minister of the Environment, Barbara Creecy ,announced earlier this month a 10 year fishing ban for the small pelagic fishing industry (sardines and anchovies) around key African penguin colonies. Hopefully some good news for the penguins. https://www.iol.co.za/weekend-argus/news/closure-of-fishing-around-penguin-colonies-for-10-years-announced-9a972259-80d7-489d-950f-e35bb84c2caf
