The Mandela Bay Development Agency will host the King of the Valley Individual Time Trial competition today (3 February 2016) between 18:00 and 19:00.
Cyclists will arrive and start warming up at 17:30 at the Tramways building. The time trials – conducted over a 1,5 kilometre stretch through the Baakens Valley’s Valley Road and South Union Street – will begin at 18:00.
The King of the Valley event offers:
- A photographic opportunity. Cyclists will be racing along part of the new route of the Herald VW Cycle Tour 2016 through the spectacular Baakens Valley, which should make for great images.
- An opportunity to engage some of cyclists on the new scenic route through an inner-city precinct of Nelson Mandela Bay.
- An opportunity to engage the MBDA on future inner-city sport events.
Luvuyo Bangazi, marketing and communications manager for the agency, said: “We are pleased to see that the Baakens Valley, a precinct under our development jurisdiction, is attracting major interest from a major sporting event in Nelson Mandela Bay.”
This year, for the first time, the Herald VW Cycle Tour route will meander through the Baakens Valley. This development shows how inner-city rejuvenation programmes are contributing towards the hosting of world-class events.
“The Baakens Valley development will connect with the future waterfront development. The result will see the area transformed into an attraction for local and overseas tourists as well as private sector investors,” Bangazi said.
