Local Mountain bike enthusiasts from around the province are preparing themselves for a tougher and more exciting KentonXtreme Eco Challenge this year. Taking place at Kenton-on-Sea over the last weekend of May, the Build-it Hi Tec Security Coastal 53km MTB race promises to deliver the goods with a very exciting course covering the Eco Estate, a breathtaking section along the beach and spectacular surrounding dairy and cattle farmlands between Kasouga and Kariega river.
Defending champion, Dawid Wright, who was recently promoted to Deputy Head at DSG and has been out of the competitive scene for a while and is uncertain to retain his title. “Last years race was an incredible experience, held in the most phenomenal conditions.” said Wright, “The ride along the beach between the Eco Estate and Kasouga was a highlight with no wind and hard sand conditions. There is no doubt that I would love to ride this race again at the end of the month, I just hope my calendar allows for it.”
Another of the favourites for the long race will be last years 20km champion, 18yr old Jason Meaton, who was the convincing winner in 2010 by over 10min. Meaton has stepped it up a gear this year and is very keen to put his hands on the KentonXtreme long course MTB Title. Close on 100 cyclists will be expected to line up at 8am on Sunday 29th May as the route takes the cyclists through the Kenton-on-Sea village before heading off-road. A shorter distance, approximately 20km, race will also take place starting some 45min later. Other exciting events included on the weekend will be the Sunshine Coast SPAR Off-Road triathlon for teams and individuals, starting at 2pm on the Saturday with a 5-a-side Beach Touch Rugby event starting at 3pm and open to all. Great food and entertainment will be on offer at the event site, Homewoods Restaurant, on Saturday evening. On the Sunday the Pam Golding Kenton 10km Beach Run will start at 8.45am is expected to draw a strong field of over 60 athletes from the local area with last years champion, Marinus Johnson of Port Elizabeth sure to be back. Local kids have also been selected to show their skills in a closed 5-a-side beach soccer tournament whilst the runners and cyclists are out on the course. At 11.30am the Kenton Rotary Club will host a 5km Beach Walk for interested local residents and friends. All the action starts and finishes on Kariega Main Beach, directly in front of Homewoods Restaurant.
“The KentonXtreme Eco Challenge is one of the more exciting adventure events along the Sunshine Coast and this year we’re hoping to attract over 300 participants to Kenton-on-Sea,” said event organiser Mike Zoetmulder of Zports. “The most enjoyable event of the weekend for us is Saturday’s off-road triathlon as it gives novices the opportunity to come and take part in a team of three to complete the 750m swim, 20km MTB ride and the 4km Beach Run. Expect lots of excitement again this year.”
Online entries and further information is available on www.kentonxtreme.co.za or contact Zports. Late registration on the day is possible, but will encur an additional R30 late entry fee. Late entries open from 12 noon at Homewoods Restaurant on Kariega Main Beach, Kenton.
