Keep your Eyes peeled for this Brydes Whale in Distress

24 March 2019 By Alan Straton

Entangled Brydes Whale
Please keep your eyes peeled for this Entangled Brydes Whale last spotted on it’s way towards Bird Island.

Expert Tours reports that at about 11.00am on Sunday 24 March 2019 at around 33.59.086 and 25.46.219 this Brydes Whale was spotted heading North East towards Bird Island swimming at about 5 knots with a 5 minute dive interval.

Unfortunately after following the Brydes whale for about an hour the film crew on the Expert Tours vessel lost sight of the whale.

At the time there were around 9 whales in the area making identifying the stricken whale in the difficult conditions and rapidly rising wind very difficult.

It appeared the Rope or net was hampering the whale to a very large extent as it appeared to be breathing heavily and tired.

The Exper Tours crew were joined by the NSRI from Station 6 and together they could not spot the whale with the gale force winds rising.

If you do spot the whale please contact NSRI immediately or let AB MArine know via their contact form HERE.

The earlier report on MyPE:

A report late this morning from Port Elizabeth’s Whale Man – Rainer Schimpf – was that he was following a Brydes Whale entangled in netting close to the Riy Banks in Algoa Bay.

NSRI was en route to assist with a detangling operation.

The Riy Banks is a deep dive site famous for its steep and colourfull walls and situated around 20km from Hobie Beach. The the large horse shoe shaped reef area includes many dive sites and is home to colourful corals, a wide variety of game fish as well as sharks.

Keep checking MyPE to see images as soon as they are available.

In August 2016 NSRI were instrumental in freeing an entangled Humpback Whale off of Noordhoek. See: Entangled Humpback whale rescued in Port Elizabeth.

The proposed fish farms in Algoa are also cause for concern that entanglememts such as these will occur again.

The experimental Octopus Fishery in Mossel Bay was the target of ire when three Brydes Whales were found dead in Mossel Bay. See: Investigation into Bryde’s whales deaths underway.
