Dear Editor
The brutal and senseless killing of former DA staff member and activist, Justice Jama, on the night of 18 November must be condemned in the strongest terms, and those responsible must swiftly be brought to justice.
Mr Jama, who witnessed a murder last month and was going to testify, was gunned down in his home in Greenfields, Kariega, last night by callous and cowardly criminals in what is alleged to be a hit to silence him.
His murder, sadly, highlights the violent crime spiralling out of control in Nelson Mandela Bay and the utter contempt these criminals have for the rule of law.
Mr Jama’s death is another reminder of the utter failings of Police Minister Bheki Cele.
How many more people must pay with their lives before President Cyril Ramaphosa admits that his minister of police has failed the people of this country?
The DA is calling for the police to take swift and immediate action to ensure that these criminals are brought to justice and that they face the full might of the law.
The DA has a plan to rescue the Eastern Cape from the violent crime that is holding its law-abiding residents prisoners in their own homes.
This includes:
- Double the number of members allocated to the Anti-Gang Unit;
- Assign the best detectives from around the country to support the SAPS in NMB;
- Deploy the SAPS National Intervention Unit / Special Task Force in the Northern Areas;
- Strengthen crime intelligence; and
- Increase police visibility
We cannot let the criminals go free and act with impunity while good people like Mr Jama have their lives taken from them.
The DA will continue our fight to rescue Nelson Mandela Bay from the violent criminals holding residents to ransom.
Regards
Andrew Whitfield MP
DA Eastern Cape Provincial Leader
