Ask most families and friend groups in October and the year end trip has shifted from a vague idea into a confirmed reservation. Kaelo Destinations, the collection behind Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana and Pambele Beach House in Mozambique, is leaning into that booking season to spotlight a particular corner of its portfolio: exclusive-use homes where a single group keeps the property, the guide and the rhythm of each day entirely to itself.
The collection does cater to solo travellers and couples through its lodges and suites, but four of its properties are meant to be booked in their entirety by one party of eight to ten guests. Kolokolo Safari Home, Shalimpo Safari Camp and Fika Futi Safari Camp at Mashatu, together with Pambele Beach House on Mozambique’s San Sebastian Peninsula, each present a distinct version of private travel, ranging from fully catered comfort through to rustic self-catering in far-flung pockets of the bush.
Why exclusive use suits group travel
A holiday shared by several generations or a circle of friends comes with its own logistical puzzles. Grandparents and children seldom keep the same hours. One guest wants to be out all day while another would rather spend the afternoon beside the pool. Across eight people, meal times, activity times and bedtimes almost never fall into neat alignment. Booking a home exclusively strips away most of that tension. The group dictates its own tempo, and the whole stay is shaped around that group instead of a fixed lodge schedule shared with strangers.
Kaelo Destinations frames its broader philosophy along the same lines. Small guest numbers, private access and intimate experiences define its properties, and a conservation levy is folded into every stay to support local communities and sustainability efforts. The name Kaelo is drawn from the Setswana word meaning to guide, guardian or to nurture, a word that captures how the company treats both its guests and the land its properties occupy.
Kolokolo Safari Home: catered privacy on the Limpopo
Groups after a Botswana safari with nothing left to organise will find Kolokolo Safari Home the most complete choice. This exclusive-use home rests in a peaceful garden that slopes down to the banks of the Limpopo River in the Pitsani area of Mashatu Game Reserve. Inside are four en-suite bedrooms sleeping eight guests, a communal living area anchored by a central fireplace, a generous lounge and dining room, and stacking doors that fold open onto a wrap-around veranda.
A private chef caters every stay in full, and the group is given its own game viewing vehicle and guide for tailored morning and evening drives. In the hours between, guests can take a dip in the reservoir swimming pool while scanning the river for wildlife, enjoy lawn games across the gardens, or come together at the outdoor boma and braai area once the sun has set. Solar energy powers Kolokolo entirely, and children of all ages are welcome.
Shalimpo and Fika Futi: self-catering in remote corners
Mashatu’s Explorer Collection answers the needs of groups who would rather do their own cooking and lean toward something simpler and more rustic, offering two self-catering camps. Either one would suit anyone chasing a Botswana safari lodge experience stripped of hotel formality.
Perched on a rocky kopje above the meeting point of the Shashe and Limpopo Rivers, where the borders of Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa converge, Shalimpo Safari Camp looks out across all three countries. It offers four bedrooms for up to eight guests, open plan living and dining areas, a covered patio, a farm-style kitchen, a small plunge pool, and a boma and braai area for evenings beneath the stars. Food and drink can be ordered ahead and delivered before guests arrive. The home runs completely off-grid on solar energy and lantern light, and a dedicated guide leads game drives in a private vehicle.
Set near the historically significant Tuli Circle, where Botswana meets Zimbabwe, Fika Futi Safari Camp is a renovated traditional farmhouse positioned beside a waterhole on a small tributary of the Matabole River. It comes with a swimming pool, a look-out deck above the waterhole and an outdoor boma. Game drives range across roughly 10,000 hectares of the unfenced Northern Tuli Game Reserve, which borders the core of Mashatu, where wildlife roams freely along natural corridors. Its name translates as to arrive again, a nod to returning guests. Both camps sleep groups of eight and welcome children of all ages.
Mashatu Game Reserve: the land of giants
Each of the three safari homes falls within Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana’s Tuli Block, a 42,000 hectare private reserve that carries the nickname the Land of Giants. Mashatu is celebrated for its big cat and predator sightings and for hosting some of the largest elephant herds found on any private game reserve in southern Africa. Its terrain shifts from ancient sandstone ridges to riverine forest, and activities on offer include game drives, cycling along elephant trails and, via WalkMashatu, guided walking safaris with nights spent under the stars.
Reaching the reserve is simple. Mashatu lies about a 1.5 hour flight from Johannesburg, and the Kaelo team is on hand to arrange air and road transfers through Limpopo Valley Access. The safari homes sit somewhere between roughly 45 minutes and an hour’s drive from Limpopo Valley Airfield and the Pont Drift border.
Pambele Beach House: the coast to themselves
Over on the Mozambique coast, Pambele Beach House carries the same exclusive-use idea down to the shoreline. Anyone weighing up Mozambique beach resorts will notice Pambele stands apart on purpose. It is a privately-owned beach house inside the Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary on the remote San Sebastian Peninsula, looking out over the Bazaruto Archipelago, and only one group occupies it at any time.
Within the house are four sea-facing en-suite villas accommodating up to ten guests, each with a private sunbathing deck, alongside open plan living spaces, an infinity pool, a jacuzzi and both indoor and outdoor seaside dining. A dedicated team, a private boat and a vehicle stand ready for daily adventures by sea and land, letting the group build each day around whatever it feels like, whether that means time on the water, exploring the coastline or simply doing next to nothing. The décor draws on and is sourced from local artisans, and the property operates on solar power with a natural water filtration system.
Guests arrive via Vilanculos International Airport on daily Airlink flights out of Johannesburg, followed by a 45 minute boat ride or a seven minute scenic helicopter charter to the house. Pambele stays open all year other than February and welcomes children of all ages. Its current offer throws in a one-way helicopter transfer on departure for stays of four nights or more, plus a 10% discount on bookings of seven or more consecutive nights.
Combining bush and beach
With both destinations only a short flight from Johannesburg, a single trip can pair a Mashatu stay with time at Pambele, carrying guests from game drives along the Limpopo to the turquoise water of the Bazaruto Archipelago. For families travelling with children, that pairing delivers plenty of variety without drawn-out overland transfers, and each property hands the group the privacy of an entire home to itself.
Built on conservation and community
Kaelo Destinations took shape under the vision of Maggie and Stephen Lansdown CBE, who are entrepreneurs, philanthropists and conservationists. Conservation-first tourism, authentic experiences and community upliftment form the foundation of the collection, and its properties are off-grid and sustainably powered, with design that melts into the landscape around them. Looking forward, the company has signalled its intention to bring new journeys and destinations into the collection over time.
