Kaelo Destinations Spotlights Late Dry Season Safari and Beach Travel

4 August 2026 By Alan Straton

Few moments in the southern African calendar reward travellers quite like the tail end of winter, and Kaelo Destinations is using August to highlight it. With the bush thinning out, waterholes retreating and mornings turning crisp, wildlife gathers and sightlines stretch far into the distance. These final weeks of the dry season are, the company suggests, the ideal cue for guests to design a trip that carries them from the reserve all the way to the coast.

Kaelo Destinations is an expanding portfolio of places chosen for their natural beauty, authenticity and sense of purpose. It launched with two remote, unspoilt properties, each carrying its own African magic: Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana and Pambele Beach House in Mozambique. The name is drawn from the Setswana word meaning to guide, to guard and to nurture, and that spirit underpins how the company leads travellers and partners alike on a journey rooted in care and respect for the land and the people who call it home.

For anyone deciding where to travel before conditions shift, a Botswana safari during this stretch delivers some of the densest game viewing of the entire year. Mashatu Game Reserve lies in eastern Botswana’s Tuli Block, a region long celebrated as the Land of Giants. Covering 42,000 hectares of privately held ground, it is renowned for big cat and predator encounters, sizeable elephant herds and sweeping, undisturbed landscapes. Private ownership keeps guest numbers low and access personal, a fit for the quieter, more exclusive style of travel at the heart of Kaelo Destinations.

Guests can experience the reserve in more than one way through the company’s safari properties. Opting for a Botswana safari lodge like Mashatu Lodge or Tuli Safari Lodge puts travellers within reach of the action while preserving the comfort and seclusion the collection is known for, while the Mashatu Tent Camp delivers a more traditional canvas experience beneath the Tuli sky. And for those keen to ease off the throttle entirely, the Explorer Collection introduces walking-led adventures via Fika Futi Safari Camp, Shalimpo Safari Camp and the WalkMashatu night under the stars, where the reserve unfolds on foot instead of from the seat of a vehicle.

A Kaelo itinerary frequently turns eastward in its later stages, towards the Indian Ocean. Pambele Beach House is a privately owned, exclusive-use hideaway within the Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary on the San Sebastian Peninsula, gazing out over the Bazaruto Archipelago. Designed for barefoot luxury and true seclusion, it offers bespoke experiences suited to multi-generational families and small groups along immaculate shorelines and unspoilt wild country. As the interior heats up through the closing weeks of winter, the coast provides an effortless contrast to the dust and drama inland, which is precisely why Kaelo’s Mozambique beach resorts and coastal houses complement time on safari so seamlessly.

Binding the reserve and the shore together is a common philosophy. Kaelo Destinations was established under the vision of Maggie and Stephen Lansdown CBE, who are entrepreneurs, philanthropists and conservationists, and the collection rests on the pillars of conservation-first tourism, authentic experiences and community upliftment. A conservation levy is folded into every stay, channelling support to local communities and continuing conservation efforts, so a trip with Kaelo is intended to leave a lasting benefit for the places and people behind each destination.

You can see that philosophy in the fabric of the properties themselves. The collection leans towards off-grid, sustainably powered stays, with design and decor that dissolve into their surroundings rather than jostle against them. Guest numbers remain small, access stays private, and the range of activities reaches across land and water, from a guided safari walk through the Tuli Block to paddling a kayak among the mangroves of Mozambique’s coastline. The thread tying it all together is a conviction that the experience is every bit as important as the setting, and that the way a place is witnessed weighs as heavily as the sights themselves.

The moment chosen for this announcement mirrors the state of the season. In these late dry-season weeks, water grows scarce throughout the interior, pulling animals into reliable patterns and rewarding unhurried, close-up observation before the first rains rewrite the scene. Seasoned travellers keep an eye out for this window, and it dovetails with warmer weather along the coast, making August and the surrounding weeks a logical time to blend a Botswana reserve stay with a Mozambican coastal getaway.

Kaelo Destinations is looking forward as much as it is looking around. Beyond Mashatu and Pambele, the collection keeps expanding, with fresh journeys, additional destinations and new avenues for meaningful travel on the horizon as the portfolio broadens. The company casts this not as a completed roster of lodges and houses but as the opening chapter of a larger collection of extraordinary places united by the same purpose, care and sense of awakening.

For the traveller, the everyday advantage is one collection capable of taking them from the ancient sandstone ridges and riverine forests of the Tuli Block to a hidden pocket of the Bazaruto Archipelago, with no need to knit together a patchwork of operators. It is that seamlessness, together with the conservation-first values woven through every stay, that Kaelo Destinations puts forward as the dry season yields to the months ahead.

Getting to these far-flung places is part of what Kaelo Destinations handles on behalf of its guests. Both the reserve and the coast lie a long way from the well-trodden routes, and the collection’s aviation support links Botswana’s interior with Mozambique’s coastline so that a combined itinerary feels fluid rather than burdensome. In practical terms, that translates into more time trailing predators along a parched riverbed or gliding through a mangrove channel, and far less spent puzzling over how one stage of the trip connects to the next.
