Dear MyPE
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Makana Municipality has today launched a petition calling on the Makana administrator, Pam Yako, to make the Kabuso report public.
The DA will, over the next few weeks, be collecting signatures and engaging with members of the public on this important issue in order to place pressure on Minister Gordhan, MEC Xasa and administrator Pam Yako, to act against corruption and maladministration by publishing the report for all to see. This petition also serves as a public awareness campaign designed to empower the residents of Makana while promoting transparency and accountability.
This week marks one year since the ANC led Makana Council resolved to commission a forensic investigation into the maladministration and corruption of the Makana Municipality. The report has been completed and the ANC has repeatedly failed to act.
The ANC in Makana have refused to have the report tabled for action at a Council meeting because they allege it to be a draft report which we believe is a blatant and deliberate delay tactic in taking decisive action against officials and politicians implicated in the report. It is nothing more than classic ANC filibustering that will buy time to redeploy corrupt cadres.
In August 2014, Minister Gordhan visited Grahamstown demanding to see the report and vowed to take decisive action. He has remained silent on the issue since.
On 1 September 2014, I submitted an application in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) to make the Kabuso Report public. After more than a month and numerous follow ups, I was given notice of an extension to reply by the administrator, Pam Yako. According to the PAIA, Ms Yako is obliged to do so and I now expect her formal reply within the next 10 days.
The DA will continue to fight for accountability and transparency and we call on all residents of Makana to do the same by signing this petition here to make their voices heard.
Regards
Andrew Whitfield
