Dear Editor
Police have arrested a housebreaking gang that operated in Kabega Park. On questioning the suspects, they found out the following that I am sure will interest you:
Said the police spokesman: “These men befriended domestic workers to keep a close eye on the property, at times even entering into relationships with them to gain access. The men would wait for the opportune time and then arrive in a taxi, which they would reverse into the garage and load up with the entire house contents. “It would appear that in some cases they were assisted by the domestic workers, while in others the domestic workers tried to resist them. A number of taxi operators have been identified as part of the syndicate through recovered fingerprints. We will be considering whether or not we will be handing over their taxis to the Asset Forfeiture Unit, based on the level of co-operation we receive.”
Another police spokesman said that thieves were becoming more sophisticated and often entered homes through the roof to avoid burglar alarms. “We have also noticed an alarming number of safes are being taken off the premises. “In the last three months, 10 safes, which collectively held 17 firearms, have been removed from homes.” He advised that people who were going away for extended periods of time to take their firearms to the nearest police station for safekeeping.
According to the Atlas Security newsletter, armed robbers breached the safety of a home in the Buffelsfontein area last weekend using mattresses as shields to prevent the alarm from activating. They entered the premises in an unprotected area and then blocked the alarm sensors, giving them as much time as they needed for the burglary. The alarm system was old and left the property vulnerable to smart burglars who know the range and capabilities of different alarm systems. The criminal element in Port Elizabeth is constantly becoming more informed, and devising new schemes to outwit security and safety measures that are put in place. If your alarm system was installed more than three years ago, it could be outdated.

Editor’s Notes: I heard today of a group of brazen thieves who had made a hole above the cigarette cage in the roof of a large FMCG warehouse and were fishing the cigarettes out in broad daylight.
