Dear MyPE
The DA Women’s Network (Dawn) will picket silently for “Justice for Jayde” outside the North End Magistrates’ Court in Port Elizabeth at 09:30 on Tuesday, 03 May 2016.
It is a sad fact that despite our country’s incredible constitution South African women continue to bear the brunt of an out of control scourge of gender violence.
Dawn will raise public awareness around the impact of gender violence on women and their families until the time comes when women’s rights – regardless of who the woman is and where she comes from – are recognised and upheld in deed and not just in word.
This is why we have picketed for “Justice for Jayde” since her senseless death in 2015. It is also why we will maintain our public visibility and our principled stance until all the women of the Eastern Cape can walk freely and safely in every corner of this beautiful province.
We stand for the protection of human rights in the firm belief that women’s rights are human rights. We know that all women are protected by the founding principles of our constitution and that despite worldwide accolades for our constitution paper rights have not been realised as real rights.
Dawn believes in the power of fair and equal treatment. We know that dignified, fair protest has the power to change society and we look forward to re-writing this part of our history.
Regards
Celeste Barker
