Just how did VWSA and GMSA Fare in the Latest NAAMSA Figures?

5 July 2011 By Alan Straton

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) commented that the June new vehicle sales reflected a mixed performance with new car sales and new truck sales showing relatively strong growth but light and medium commercial vehicle sales reflecting weakness. June 2011 aggregate industry domestic sales improved by 5 006 units or 12,6% to 44 880 vehicles from 39 874 vehicles sold during June last year. Total domestic sales for the first half of calendar 2011 remained 15,7% ahead of the corresponding six months in 2010. This was down from the 16,4% year on year growth for the first five months of the year. June 2011 export sales at 25 295 vehicles had registered good growth rising by 4848 units or 23,7%.

The June 2011 NAAMSA figures show Port Elizabeth and Nelson Mandela Bay Manufactured Vehicles representing 29.91% (13 424) of the total 44 880 sold in South Africa by all manufacturers. We have excluded exports. This represents a 0.08% (+ 1 027 units) improvement on May 2011.

GMSA had the following comments on the June Sales:

“General Motors South Africa (GMSA) continued its growth trend through June to realise a very satisfying 41,1% increase in sales for the first six months of the year compared to 2010,” says Malcolm Gauld, GMSA Vice President Sales and Marketing. “GMSA’s sales for the month were 5 201 units, up 36% on June 2010 compared to industry sales that were up 12,6% for the same period. This translates to an increase in total market share of 2,13% during the first six months of the year with GMSA holding a secure third place amongst the OEMs.

“A key factor in this performance has been the market acceptance of our latest range of Chevrolet models including the new Aveo, Spark and Cruze as well as the latest version of the Captiva released during May. In June, the Aveo, Spark and Cruze all featured amongst the top ten selling passenger vehicles. The imminent release of the new seven-seater Orlando MPV will further enhance GMSA’s representation in the passenger vehicle market.

“In the light commercial sector, the Chevrolet Corsa Utility enjoyed its 75th consecutive month of leadership in the sub 1-ton segment 1 448 sales posted for the month. Once again the Corsa Ute was ranked second in overall light commercial sales. Together with sales of the Isuzu KB GMSA’s share of the light commercial market increased to 21,5% in June.

“Viewing the market as a whole a softening in sales is evident although June was the 18th month of growth on a year-on-year basis. It is possible that the softer sales trend is driven in part by a shortage of supply out of Japan on some models. Less than ideal economic conditions are impacting on the market with a tendency to buy down in price becoming evident.

A further factor to consider is that as we move ahead through the year the recovery experienced in sales in the latter part of 2010 will dilute the growth off a weaker base of the earlier part of the current year. The higher end volume forecasts for the industry, led by the positive start to the year, might now be a little ambitious.”

VWSA commented as follows:

“From a quarterly perspective total sales of new passenger cars during the second quarter of 2011 declined by 15.3 percent when compared to the first quarter of 2011. However, they were 13.8 percent up on sales during the second quarter of 2010,” said Mike Glendinning, Director of Sales and Marketing, Volkswagen Group South Africa.

“Volkswagen Group South Africa ended the month with a 23.8 percent share of the total passenger market, with 7 498 units sold – once again clearly outselling its nearest competitor. The Polo Vivo continues to top the new car sales charts, with sales of 2 933 units. The award-winning Polo was the second best seller for both the Company and the market – with sales of 2 097 units,” noted Glendinning.

“In the premium segment, Audi sold 1 266 units. The Audi A4 and newly-introduced A1 continues to be the Brand’s best sellers, and helps position the Brand to extend its share in this segment,” said Glendinning.

“The Amarok Pick-up sold 463 units during June, and we are confident the introduction of the single-cab Amarok in July will further entrench Volkswagen Group South Africa’s footing in the light commercial segment.”

Volkswagen Group South Africa was for the second month in a row, the top selling vehicle manufacturer in the country in June – selling a total of 8 223 units.

“Looking ahead, an ongoing decline in the rate of change in real new vehicle prices – which has been in negative territory since May last year – will support sales volumes, albeit at a slower rate than last year. Added to that – an improvement in supply with the industry steadily recovering from shortages of product and components resulting from the tsunami in Japan in March this year, is also expected to bolster sales volumes going forward,” concluded Glendinning.
