Join the “Rage Against The Rubbish” Protest March

The Democratic Alliance (DA) invites every concerned citizen to join us in a peaceful protest march to City Hall to focus on the fact that our city, and in particular our disadvantaged suburbs, have evolved into a dumping ground and a health hazard.

The march will be led by Nqaba Bhanga MP, Cllr Brenda Matthee, Cllr Bobby Cekisani and Cllr Michael Jarvis. The constituencies of Winterberg, South West and Northern Areas will also join the march.

The DA is very concerned that the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM) is failing to execute their Constitutional mandate regarding every citizen’s right to live in an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being.

The illegal dumping of waste in our streets, on verges and in public open spaces has reached intolerable proportions. This is especially prevalent in our previously disadvantaged areas where communities suffer as direct result of the metro’s failure to institute weekly refuse collections and failed to enforce the appropriate by-laws.

This does not only constitute an increasing health risk to all our affected communities, but undermines the pride and energy of these communities. This hazard has also had a demonstrably negative impact on our reputation as a holiday destination.

As the DA, we can no longer stand by and witness this failure in service delivery or stand on the sidelines.  We will demand attention to a 10-Point Plan, served by memorandum to the city’s leadership: “Clean up our metro!”

Assembly point: At the Albany Road bridge (corner Lespade and Slater Streets)

The march will proceed down Govan Mbeki Street, into Strand Street and right into Fleming Street to Vuyisile Mini Square in front of City Hall. The walk is about 2 km’s long.
