For years Eastern Cape rugby supporters have been starved for top rugby. There was always a passion for the game which the 2010 promotion relegation playoff match showed with more than 45 000 supporters in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
Then, after running various social pages successfully, in late 2012 the Kings Army was born.
The club name and a brand was born, based on the fact that every King deserves an Army. The organisers felt that if the supporters believed and supported like an Army, this would give the players the extra push to give us the winning results.
Even though the Southern Kings have not always had the results on the park the #KingsArmy has always been there supporting, promoting the games in the certainty that the supporters will return en masse.
The Supporters Club was there for the players when the union/franchise went through some troubled times in 2015, when we raised more than R135 000 to assist the players over the festive season when salaries were not paid.
The Kings Army has had a few ‘homes’: the North End Powerboat club, the Kings Den, the Kings Arms in Mount road and the North East Suite at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. The plan is to find a a permanent home at the stadium
The highs and lows of the Kings Army:
The Lows: We endured some serious criticism form the rest of South Africa on the manner in which the Southern Kings were included in Super Rugby – at every braai, meeting and on every social page the Kings Army received a battery of abuse. But, the poor results on the field have to be the biggest low. Supporters haven’t joined the Kings Army in the numbers that were expected – probably for a number of reasons including the turmoil at the union and poor running of the franchise between 2014 & 2017.
The Highs: Introducing the brand and handing out the first official supporters shirts. The biggest high was in 2013, when the Southern Kings returned from their first Australasia tour and with their victory in Melbourne, thousands of supporters filled the Port Elizabeth Airport and sang the Kings players through the arrival hall like true Kings.
Hopefully now that the Franchise is back and owned by Eastern Cape and run on business lines, the Kings Army hope that results on the field will improve and the supporters will return.
The Kings Army is a band of brothers (and sisters) that have always believed in the Southern Kings, players come and players go, however the badge will always remain, and, the Kings Army will be there supporting and prepared to go to war for their Kings.
