On 05/08/2024 John voted Yes in our poll on ending punitive water tariffs.
John Says:
Dams are sufficiently full to put a full end the water restrictions and punitive tariffs. In addition, the Gariep Dam offers back up if needed. The main reason to end the restrictions and punitive tariffs is however to ensure that we have a mechanism to curb water usage when the next drought comes along. If we maintain the restrictions and punitive tariffs now, then how will we restrict usage in the next drought? This would require introducing ridiculous measures and unsustainable water tariffs, in order to then introduce a new level of punitive tariffs. This would likely lead to court action, as these new tariffs would only have become necessary because of the Municipality’s failure to end the present punitive tariffs. In summary, these restrictions were introduced to curb water usage in a drought situation, and not as an additional revenue source to fund a dysfunctional municipality.

On 12 December 2024 the NMB ended the Punitive Water Tariffs. Thank you to all who voted and put pressure on the Muni to end these tariffs.
All responses are also submitted to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and Director of Water.
