Jobs Lost Due to Delays in Approval of Building Plans

The DA is deeply concerned about the apparent job losses caused by delays in the approval of building plans in the Metro over the past few months.

An investigation has revealed that delays experienced in the approval of building plans were the result of the non-appointment of a technical officer to analyze the plans.

The DA intervened to ensure the appointment of technical staff on an overtime basis to oversee the technical aspects relating to the approval of building plans, however, a permanent solution requires the appointment of a qualified technical officer to examine all future plans.

The DA has been assured by the senior manager in the Human Settlements Department, who is responsible for building plans, that there will be no further delays in the approval of these plans.

The economic impact of these delays, affecting both developers and employees, could well run into tens of millions of rands and undermine future job creation opportunities in Nelson Mandela Bay.

The Nelson Mandela Bay economy is fragile, with a devastating unemployment rate of 30%. Our Metro cannot afford increased job losses and underdevelopment caused by an under capacitated and unstable Metro administration.

The DA will continue to propose solutions in an effort to expand opportunities for all of our residents. The DA believes that jobs should be highly prioritized and this requires improving our efficiency as a Metro in order to attract investment that will create jobs.

It is time for change in Nelson Mandela Bay and the DA is ready to be that change by restoring hope and opportunities to our Metro.
