As part of addressing the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality, the Deputy Minister of Public Works Jeremy Cronin will launch the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) Metrowide School Support Programme which will provide work opportunities to 330 EPWP participants.
The launch will take place on 11 December 2015 from 10h00 at the Helenvale Recreational Centre.
A total of 330 EPWP participants have been identified from poorest families in and around Port Elizabeth to participate in the EPWP Metrowide School Support Programme which will provide them with EPWP work opportunities for a period of ten months coupled with theoretical and experiential learning. In addition to that, the participants will be paid a stipend of not less than a prescribed minimum wage R78.86 per task performed.
The participants will be placed in 200 schools and their responsibilities and services will include among others, cleaning, security, administration and general maintenance of the schools.
This Metrowide School Support Programme is an initiative and a partnership of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM), National Department of Public Works through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) Independent Development Trust (IDT) and the Department of Education.
