The annual Jam Jar Rally hits the road on Friday, 22 September, from its traditional Something Good Roadhouse starting point at Pollok Beach, in Summerstrand, Gqeberha. The aim of this event is to raise funds for charity, through Round Table Algoa 108 – but fun, craziness and shenanigans are high on the agenda.
“This event is carefully planned each year and there are very specific rules for everyone involved, although it looks like complete chaos to outsiders,” says Shaun Tait, Round Table Algoa 108 convenor. “All entered cars must have a purchase value of no more than R30,000 and after that entrants are expected to pimp their ride for the event.”
No vehicles with a vintage younger than 30 years are allowed, and each team is compromised of four people. Teams gather on Friday morning from 06:30 to 08:00 before setting out on a cross-country route, with a variety of stops on the two-day adventure.
“Participants really put effort into their entries for the Jam Jar Rally and there is a great camaraderie that goes along with this fundraising initiative,” says Tait. “I cannot imagine what spectators and the unwitting that stumble across our path must think, when they see a convoy of refugees from a 90s Rave out on the road, but everyone is having fun and the funds raised are used to support our Roundtable charities.”
Roundtable 108 supports, among other charities, MTR Smit Children’s Haven, the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star children’s care home, Hannah’s Arms safety and foster care for babies, and the Quadriplegic Association of the Eastern Cape.
“Everyone is welcome to join us at Something Good on Friday morning, between 06:30 and 08:00, when the teams arrive. It is a colourful display of craziness before the Jam Jar Rally heads out on the route,” says Tait. “The cars are quite a sight and the participants dress to their theme, making it quite the carnival atmosphere, and well worth the early morning outing.”
