Cape Town, November 2020 – J.beenz stall at Bay Harbour Market has moved into a high traffic visible area. “Not only is the move motivating me to be better than the best, but I am also being introduced to a wider audience,” beams owner Gillian Padoa. And the response has been great!

The story of J.beenz starts when Gillian’s daughter, Emma Dee was just six months old. The company she had been working for closed its doors leaving her jobless. What was a young mom to do? There’s the adage: “When one door closes, another opens.” And it perfectly sums up Gillian. She had to adapt. She used her background in fashion and her daughter as her muse and created her own kiddies clothing brand. “I started at a small stall in Greenmarket Square selling about 100 oversized and overdyed babygros,” she laughs. That was, then. Today though the brand has evolved, her mission has remained the same. “To clothe little people with the passion and quality they deserve.” J.beenz garments are individually created in her home studio in Hout Bay where they are crafted with love and care until they reach their offices in Woodstock, and their virtual and physical stalls, and finally to you the client. “I do a happy dance and feel a huge sense of pride when our product catches the eye of a customer,” she exclaims.

The essence of the brand has always been to create clothing for babies that are cool and not the norm, and even today, now that baby Emma Dee is all grown up, it is still the epitome of trendy. Like their latest summer range which is a journey across the desert and into the oasis. “Our tones and hues reflect this joyful passage and there are some great new styles including this season’s buzz word – the trapeze dress!” Don’t believe us, pop in for a visit to find out for yourself.

You can visit J.beenz at the market on Friday from 5pm to 9pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 9.30am to 4pm.
