DA wins Nelson Mandela Metro 2016 Municipal Elections

As at 1:00 pm on 5 August 2016 with 100% of votes counted in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole the DA, with 46.71% of the vote has wrested control of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality from the ANC who have ruled from the onset of the democratic South Africa.

The Democratic Alliance grabbed the last seat of Ward 37 (Arcadia, Kwadesi) with 68.97% of the votes cast.

In the Ward Elections the ANC has 36 Seats, the DA has 23 and the EFF has 1 seat.

In the combined Ward and PR results the DA has 57 seats, the ANC 50 seats, the EFF 6, UDM 2, AIC 1, UFEC 1, COPE 1, ACDP 1 and PA 1 for the total of 120 available in Council.

The ANC finished with 40.92% and the EFF 5.12% of the total votes cast.

Of the 609 217 registered voters a total of 387 502 votes were cast, with 6 954 spoilt votes and a voter turnout of 63.61%.

Mayor in Waiting, Athol Trollip sent a stern warning to corrupt municipal officials in the Municipality when he wrote to all staff on 1 August 2016 saying; “The only people in the metro staff administration who will be subject to direct scrutiny with potential negative consequences will be those implicated in corruption and found guilty of impropriety in this regard and those that have been appointed irregularly.”

In reply Danny Jordaan said on 2 August; “And we have kept the administration out of the political election. Now, he’s declared it open season. So the EFF can write to staff, ANC can write to staff. The arrogance that he displays shows why he will lose tomorrow.”

With the numbers not being very conclusive or clear cut in terms of a 50% + 1 vote the citizens of Nelson Mandela Bay can only hope that a STRONG coalition government can be put in place very quickly as Nelson Mandela Bay can ill afford the chaos of political infighting for another 5 years.

“Winning NMB is an endorsement of South Africa’s democracy,” said Trollip. The Democratic Alliance has said that it is looking at forming a coalition mainly from the UDM, COPE, AIC and ACDP with no mention of the EFF.
