For the past 10 years, Isak has owned a Private Residence in South End.
Isak estimates the additional monthly maintenance and cleaning costs on this asset, as the result of the manganese ore, to be in the region of R300 per month.
The cost of accelerated wear and tear over the life of Isak’s asset is estimated to be: R20000.
Isak has this to say about the Manganese Ore pollution from the Port of Port Elizabeth; “We live direclty above the harbour. On a daily basis we clean the black muck off our doors, gates and furniture in the house. normally it is sticky probably being close to the sea. Our curtains get washes regularly because they turn black.
It is unfair to live in these conditions in the middle of the city. It affects many people and the patronising Transnet responses to the effect that nothing is wrong(sounds like a Zuma chant) is sickening.
If our lungs look like the furniture and the doors in the house we do not have the prospect of a good old age. It is like passive smoking. One can just wonder where all the dust accumulates in the lungs. It is going in – how is it going to get out.
It would have been nice if Transnet kept to their promises because the ore dumps and the ‘beautiful’ oil tanks would have been gone by now.
Oil tanks and ore dumps and machinery is our views from Home. And the clouds of dust when the ore is discharged.
Help”
