The next Know Your Bay presentation will take place on Tuesday 5 December, from 17:30 for 18:00 at Bayworld, where Dr Gary Koekemoer, from the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) will ask: “Is there hope? Environmental Activism in a changing climate”.
In his talk, Dr Koekemoer will reflect on the various activities the Algoa Bay Branch of WESSA has been involved over the years (like Total Energy Exploration & Production in South Africa, Shell, Thyspunt nuclear and CGG’s seismic surveys). He will also suggest where activism is needed in response to climate change.
Dr Koekemoer has long been interested in complex systems, particularly human and natural ones and their interface. His PhD in philosophy (NMU) and Masters in labour relations (NMU) both focused on applying complexity-systems thinking to contemporary issues. As an activist Gary started off in the early 90’s in the peace committee structures and then went into mediation and community conflict resolution. In most recent years that activism has focused on environmental challenges, and as the local chair of WESSA ABB, and now as Environmental Governance Committee Chair of WESSA. He also serves as the NMB Business Chamber lead on climate change and now leads a team developing a Climate Smart plan for Nelson Mandela Bay under the auspices of the Wilderness Foundation Africa and in partnership with the Presidential Climate Commission. As an avid open-water swimmer he passionate about our blue lung: Algoa Bay.
The event is free and open to all.
