Iphulo Drama Festival

The Iphulo Drama Festival is returning to the PE Opera House featuring 13 productions which run daily from 12:00PM at the Barn Theatre.

Iphulo Performing Arts Festival’s humble beginnings in 2008 as a one act drama festival has now grown and evolved to a festival featuring strong Drama productions from throughout the Eastern Cape.

This year’s festival will also feature 7 productions from the districts and 6 productions commissioned by the PE Opera House, they are as follows:

Districts Productions

  • Amathole: I Saw a Nightmare
  • Alfred Nzo: The Dark Cloud Season 2
  • BCM: Kilimanjaro
  • Chris Hani: Ukuthwalwa
  • Joe Gqabi: Holy Plan B
  • OR Tambo: Olivia Twisted
  • Sarah Baartman: Wandenza Umama

Commissioned Productions

  • Stones in a Whirlwind: Produced by Nompumezo Buzani
  • Rest in Peace Mama: Produced by Mongezi Ncwadi
  • Umthandazo: Produced by Abongile Ntshuca
  • Choice Amidst Waves: Produced by Nobesuthu Rayi
  • Nzika: Produced by Shafiq Kalumo
  • Worst of Both Worlds: Produced by Lonwabo Xatasi

For the duration of the festival there will be daily Arts Conversations and recitals taking place at the ‘Ideas Corner’ located at the upper foyer of the PE Opera House. We are thrilled to have German Director and Theatre Frank Furhmann with us at this years Iphulo Drama Festival, he will be conducting a Theatre Workshop on Day 4 – Thursday 29 March and will run from 11:00AM until 13:00PM. This workshop is open to all Nelson Mandela Bay theatre makers and entry is free. new feature in this edition of Iphulo will be the evening music and spoken word collaboration performances will take place at the Ideas Corner (upper foyer) at the PE Opera House from 21:00 – 23:00 for the duration of the festival.

Iphulo Performing Arts Festival ticket prices are very affordable and are as follows: Single Show tickets R20; Day Passes R50 and Festival Pass R150

Closing off Iphulo with a bang will be the EC Comedy All Star comedy show featuring the hilarious Khanyisa Bunu; Tsepiso Nzayo, Mbu ‘ManyLaughs’ Msongelwa; Sqhazolo; LonB; Zimvo; Luphelo & Anga! Tickets for this side splitting show are R100 Single and R150 Double sold through Computicket.
