Industry leaders to address guests at Leadership Summit

7 June 2018 By Alan Straton

A former Constitutional Court judge, a prominent economist, a CEO of a business chamber and an academic deputy vice-chancellor are among the trailblazers who will bring their lessons of leadership to the Bay next month.

The fifth annual Nelson Mandela Bay Leadership Summit, to be held on June 27 in partnership will unite several thought leaders to discuss their experience of leadership in the 21st century.

Nelson Mandela University Business School director Dr Randall Jonas – who is one of the Leadership Summit’s partners – said: “In the 21st century, skills such as innovation, entrepreneurship and digital management are indispensable for leaders. Through this year’s summit, we want to empower leaders to take the lead and inspire those in an uncertain world, a world sometimes full of unknown unknowns.”

The speakers for this year’s event will include retired Justice of the Constitutional Court Judge Johann Kriegler, economist Dr Thabi Leoka, University of the Western Cape’s deputy vice chancellor academic Prof Vivienne Lawack and Nomkhita Mona, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber.

They will be joined by Kagiso Trust founding member Rev Frank Chikane and accomplished businesswoman Kate Moodley, who is the franchise director of Discovery Holdings and has been included in Mail and Guardian’s Top 200 South Africans list.

“The summit’s curated speaker line-up will unpack key concepts, lessons, developments and trends around leadership, under the aegis of technological disruption, people, ethics, power, social justice, sustainability, development and growth,” said Jonas.

The theme of the summit will be ‘Leadership on the edge: Hope or despair? Lessons in responsible leadership’.

“We have witnessed some major failures in leadership over the last year on global, continental, national and regional level. To be sure, there is a disconcerting level of ethical decay and mounting shortfalls in responsible leadership.

“The challenge to leadership is unrivalled in our history, and further complexities such as technological disruption, changes in geopolitics, climate change, poor integration between the private and public sector, and socio-economic problems are playing a major role.

“All of this adversely affects shareholder wealth and the creation of inclusive stakeholder prosperity, and against this backdrop, leaders are required to drive results and the bottom line, create systems of innovation and do business in an environmentally friendly, socially and ethically responsible framework.”

The summit will take place on June 27 from 8am.
