In the days when the Boet’s rugby poles had tyres around them

The first rugby test against England in 1984 was held at the Boet Erasmus Stadium in Port Elizabeth on 2 June. Local hero, Danie Gerber scored the first try in inimitable fashion and the Springboks went on to win 33-15. See the ‘old style’ post protectors of the Boet in the video below.

The 1984 England rugby union tour of South Africa was a series of seven matches played by the England national rugby union team in South Africa in May and June 1984. England played seven games, including two test matches against the South Africa national rugby union team. They won four of the seven matches but lost both of the test matches as well as drawing the fixture against Western Province.

The second test was held in Ellis Park, Johannesburg on 19 June and the Springboks won 35-9
