Illegal Firearms Recovered

The continued fight against the disregard for law, order and proliferation of illegal firearms yielded positive results when twelve (12) suspects were arrested and drugs with estimated street value of R1500, five (5) illegal firearms with twenty one rounds of ammunition were confiscated over the past weekend.

Five (5) suspects were arrested in Mthatha and Cambridge for vehicle theft while the other nine were arrested for armed robbery, possession of drugs, and illegal firearms and ammunition.

Mthatha SAPS together with Eldorado Park Police have arrested three wanted suspects aged between 26 and 38 years old for armed robbery and theft of motor vehicle. The cases were opened this month of July 2017 at Eldorado Park Police station and they were also linked to Ngangelizwe SAPS armed robbery case in Mthatha. The suspects were arrested at Nelson Mandela drive in Mthatha on 21 July 2017 at about 19H00 and handed over to Eldorado SAPS for further investigation.

Two suspects, a 20 year old female and a 31 year old male were arrested for suspected stolen vehicle on Sunday, 23 July 2017. The vehicle was stolen at Cambridge, East London. Both suspects are expected to appear at Butterworth Magistrate’s Court facing vehicle theft charges.

Three suspects aged between 27 -35 years were arrested at Mbekweni in Mdantsane for possession of Mandrax tablets with a street value estimated at R1 500 and possession of an unlicensed firearm(9mm ) and ammunition(four rounds) and possible stolen goods. Police pounced on suspected drug dealers during an anti-drug operation when they confiscated an unlicensed firearm, police bullet-proof vest and mandrax tablets. The suspects are due to appear at Mdantsane Magistrate’s court today, 24 July 2017.

Grahamstown SAPS members were following up on valuable information when they searched a house at Vukani location, Grahamstown and found a Lorcin Walter 7.65 with an identifiable serial number and 13 rounds of ammunition on 22 July 2017. During further investigation it was established that this firearm was stolen from Peddie SAPS in March 2017. The suspect aged 26 was arrested for possession of one (1) unlicenced firearm and possession of (four rounds) ammunition. He is expected to appear in court early this week.

Yesterday, Sunday, 23 July 2017, when vigilant police members on patrol spotted a vehicle driving suspiciously in Jeffreys Bay. Members pulled the vehicle off the road at about 17:45, in Jeffreys Street, Jeffreys Bay. Upon searching the white VW Golf, members discovered three unlicensed firearms (two 9mm and one revolver with ammunition). The two suspects, ages 26 and 32, were arrested on the spot. Both were detained on charges ranging from the illegal possession of firearms, ammunition and conspiracy to commit a crime. The two suspects are due to appear in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, Tuesday, 25 July 2017.

In the second incident, vigilant members from the Humansdorp Operational Command Centre were busy patrolling Donkerhoek, Arcadia, Humansdorp at 22:00, when members noticed a man walking suspiciously in the street. It is alleged that when the suspect saw the police members he threw something on the ground. Upon investigation members discovered a 9mm firearm and ammunition. The suspect (in his 30’s) was detained on a charge of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and he is also due to appear tomorrow in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court, Tuesday, 25 July 2017, on these charges.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga expressed her appreciation of the hard work and success achieved by the members and different clusters in the effort to eliminate the circulation of illegal firearms and drug abuse in our province. She lauded the alert police officials for their quick response that resulted in the arrest of the suspects and the confiscation of the firearms.
