The Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) in association with Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s (NMBM) will be leading community members and stakeholders in a Central clean up awareness campaign on the 12th July at 09h00.
In 2018, the MBDA embarked on the awareness campaign in Cuyler Crescent, Gordon Terrace, Belmont Terrace, Parliament and Rink Street where 317 general waste bags and 17 recycle bags were collected. This was done in an effort to enforce waste management by-laws and address illegal dumping.
The NMBM is working towards increasing responsive waste management through improved service delivery and generating awareness amongst Bay residents. At the same time, the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) and the Central Special Rating Area (SRA) committee made a breakthrough by surpassing the number of SRA consents needed to get a mandate from the property owners of Central to pay for additional services.
Part of the SRA services include a waste management system, which will have a dedicated vehicle patrolling the area collecting waste, install bins in strategic locations throughout the Central area, as well as Ad hoc employment of street sweepers.
MBDA CEO, Ashraf Adam, said, “the MBDA will continue to find ways and means to advance sustainable socio-economic developments that rejuvenate the CBD through such initiatives and strategic partnerships.”
The public is invited to come join hands in keeping the Bay clean. Participants will be provided with refuse bags and gloves as well as refreshments next to the pyramid-shaped monument at the Donkin Reserve. The NMBM Waste Management truck will be available to collect the refuse bags. The Metro police will be there for safety and will be busy conducting patrols around the area during the clean-up. Other stakeholders that will be present include Healing Hands Foundation, Ward 5 councillor, Department of Home Affairs, BM Machesa, the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA)/ NTC, Human Settlement, Waste Trade, Siyaya Skills Institute, Humewood South African Police Services, and the Central SRA Committee.
