Then scroll down just a bit to see the NMMU Choir members in action.
By the way, a flash mob is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and sometimes seemingly pointless act for a brief time, then disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment and/or satire. Flash mobs are organized via telecommunications, social media, or viral emails. (Editors Notes: so can we really call this one a flash mob?)
Be that as it may Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) is putting Nelson Mandela Bay on the map thanks to its successful staging of a flash mob on 25 June in the Greenacres Shopping Centre, with video footage that has now gone viral.
The international award-winning NMMU choir gave an impromptu performance of popular songs to the delight of unsuspecting shoppers at Greenacres Shopping Centre. That footage is now being shared around the globe, thanks to a posting on You Tube.
The inspiration for the flash mob came from this premise; “Imagine a complete stranger going down on bended knee to you and breaking out in song in the midst of a crowded shopping mall?”
Though staged to promote the closing date for undergraduate studies at the institution in 2012, the viral marketing of the song-and-dance routine has much wider benefits – like that of simply promoting both NMMU and Nelson Mandela Bay generally.
“This five-minute video takes us to places we have never been, and introduces us to audiences who might never have heard of us,” says NMMU’s Marketing and Corporate Relations Director Pieter Swart.
“It certainly profiles us – and the city – as a go-getting, fun place to be.”

The singing fair brought a tear to my rheumy eyes – well done guys and girls, well done.
The university is hoping to receive a million hits on YouTube – a pretty tall order with under a thousand views so far – so get Tweeting, FB’ing, Digging and Stumbling people…….
