If only the Southern Kings had kept Curwin Bosch in Port Elizabeth

19 March 2017 By Alan Straton

Sure, it is nice to think that one man can make a difference to a team but allow me to live in that hazy dream world in which the Southern Kings are actually …. relevant!

In the Super Rugby game played between the Southern Kings and the Cell C Sharks at the Kings Park Stadium in Durban on 18 March 2017 the responsibility for pulling the Sharks out of the kak and into a winning position fell to young 2016 Junior Springbok Player of the Year, Curwin Bosch – who has the enviable reputation of being a playmaker from his days at Grey High School in Port Elizabeth.

After opening the scoring for the Sharks in the 3rd minute with a penalty it was left to Bosch to save the day for the Sharks, who were trailing the Kings by one point, by kicking a 55 metre odd penalty in the 70th minute to win the game 19-17.

The match saw 19 penalties awarded (12 against the Kings) and two Yellow Cards (Ross Geldenhys, Southern Kings in the 25th minute and Chris Cloete, Southern Kings in the 65th minute)

A failed Lionel Cronje penalty in the 78th minute sealed the deal for the Kings who have yet to win a match against a South African team in Super Rugby.

Southern Kings Coach Deon Davids said; “I am very proud of the boys effort. I think they made a huge step up in certain areas of the game. Defensively they were very good in the first half. Our scrums were a bit under pressure. The areas where we definitely have to work on is our discipline as we conceded too many penalties which kept the Sharks in the game. Our tactical kicking wasn’t as good as it can be which allowed the Sharks to stay in our half and we lost a bit of control and territory by not playing in the right areas. We have a lot of positives to work from and we will continue to try and improve every week.”

Scorers:

  • Cell C Sharks 19 (8): Tries- Lourens Adriaanse, Kobus van Wyk. Penalties – Curwin Bosch (3)
  • Southern Kings 17 (14): Tries – Ruan Lerm, Makazole Mapimpi. Conversions – Lionel Cronje (2). Penalties – Lionel Cronje.
