I Write What I Like

30 November 2023 By Port Elizabethan

Dear Editor

According to my experience and observation, I have noticed a pattern that education has never increased anyone’s Intelligence Quotient [IQ], albeit embellishing it [making someone seem smart] due to their very own fortitude to acquire some venerated qualification anyway. Otherwise, the South African economy and society at large would have been greatly improved for the past 29 years of democracy if education on its own was the silver bullet to our problems.

To cut a long story short, Professor Jonathan Jansen’s week-in-and-week out advocacy for greater participation in the interest and study of Mathematics and/or Science is justifiably spot on for adding value to our economy at large, however, the studying of those disciplines are not a supernatural remedy to cure our shallow-mindedness, meaning status-consciousness or matter-of-factly snobbishness; especially among Non-Whites of our dear South Africa. This example is evident when the rightly esteemed Prof condescendingly, if not snobbishly, refers to the albeit politically-correct and ego-cushioning Maths Literacy subject as some ‘watered down mathematics’, maybe justifiably so as he seems to be ignorant to the existence of a deficiency called Dyscalculia [a learning disorder that affects a person’s ability to understand numbers’ based information and mathematics]; akin to Dyslexia [learning disorder that entails reading and writing derangement].

Writing from personal experience and observation, Non-White people, especially Black South Africans, tend to suffer from Sophomania [a delusion of having superior intelligence than everyone else] upon being vaguely competent in Mathematics & Science subjects; whereas White people tend to study and research the very same subjects harder to sharpen their skills in order to improve their socio-economic status and thereby improving the quality of life for themselves and possibly their fellow man.

Black Educational Snobs [BES] therefore come mostly from Sophomaniacs [people who have a delusion of being extremely intelligent] and thereby disrespecting all and sundry with their need for acknowledgement and validation through belittling those less gifted than themselves in those disciplines.

Regards
