I am sure my diet helped the train win

20 August 2018 By Alan Straton

Bernhard Kapp
Individual winner of the 2018 Medihelp Train Race, 27 year old Bernhard Kapp from Newton Park finishing in a time of 2 hours 31 minutes.

Editor: As a valued member of the team ON THE TRAIN I have been in training for the longest time and am convinced that the weight that I lost contributed in no small measure to us beating the runners in yesterday’s Medihelp Train Race from Port Elizabeth to Uitenhage…

With a record breaking 223 teams taking part this year, it was the Train that crossed the line first in a time of 1 hour and 46 minutes, just 3 minutes ahead of the first running team, the Gamble Socials.

Teams were well supported along the route with over 100 volunteers from CHOC, Bluewater Bay Neighbourhood Watch I-Patrol and Despatch Sector Policing lining the route and hundreds of locals coming out in support of the race as it passed through Port Elizabeth, Swartkops, Azalea Park, Despatch and Uitenhage.

The first corporate team home was Klinicare Pharmacy in 2 hours followed by Gamble Pharmacy a minute later and SPAR Eastern Cape another minute behind them. Certainly the performance of the day came from the youngsters from Gamble Social who blitzed home in 1 hour 49 minutes to win the social category. In the well contested clubs category it was Transnet Warriors in first place from Despatch Ac Men and the Macheen Team in 3rd.

The Framesby Ysters won the High School category from Bergsig with Daniel Pienaar in 3rd place whilst Laerskool Handhaaf won the Primary schools category ahead of Summerwood Primary and Laerskool Sonop.

In the individual category it was Bernhard Kapp who won in a time of 2hrs 31min ahead of Darryl Bagley (2:36) and last year’s champion Bruce Gie (2:40) whilst Lauren Smith won the ladies individual title in a time of 3hrs and 3 min.

Full results on www.trainrace.co.za whilst pictures from the event are on the Medihelp Train Race Facebook page.
