On 6 July a group of organists visited the Jacobikerk in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Gerrit Chr. de Gier, organist of the church gave an interesting organ demonstration of the church’s very old organ. Members of the group also got the opportunity to play the instrument. The organ is totally mechanical and you need to use a bit more muscle power to play the instrument than we are used to. The pedal board also has an unfamiliar dimention and if you are not used to it, you can have trouble in finding your way. And if you play without shoes — not the correct way of playing the pedals! — it becomes extremely uncomfortable, as you can see in this video. Gerrit and some fellow organists assisted me by doing the registration: nothing is rehearsed, but we somehow managed to get a nice build up in sound/volume.
